Ventellin shot her a horrified look, but Danyel laughed. “I recall an old Terran song with a similar theme,” he said, “But all I remember now is the chorus: ‘My gods, how the money rolls in.’”

“Indeed,” Lord Aldaran chuckled, raising his cup. “Here’s to the money continuing to roll in.”

“Ay-men,” Smith agreed.

Sharalynn only smiled, content with how few of the dinner crowd understood what she meant.

A Walk in the Mountains

by Margaret L. Carter & Leslie Roy Carter

Darkover’s snows practically beg for adventures, and what better one than a rescue mission? Instead of the skis in Jane M. H. Bigelow’s “Snow Dancing,” the characters in “A Walk in the Mountains” team up with that most iconic of dog rescuer breeds, the St. Bernard.

Margaret L. Carter specializes in vampires, having been marked for life by reading Dracula at the age of twelve. Her Ph.D. dissertation even included a chapter on Dracula. Her vampire novel Dark Changeling won an Eppie Award in the horror category in 2000. Other creatures she writes about include werewolves, dragons, ghosts, and Lovecraftian entities with tentacles. In addition to her horror, fantasy, and paranormal romance fiction, she has had several nonfiction books and articles published on vampires in literature, including Different Blood: The Vampire As Alien. Recent work includes Passion In The Blood (a vampire romance), Sealing The Dark Portal (a paranormal romance with Lovecraftian elements), and “Crossing the Border” (horror erotic romance novella with Lovecraftian elements). Les and Margaret Carter attended the College of William and Mary together as a married couple and earned their bachelors’ degrees there. Les later received an MS in Electronics Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Captain after thirty years of service. He and Margaret co-wrote “Carmen’s Flight,” published in one of the early Darkover anthologies. They have also collaborated on a fantasy series, beginning with Wild Sorceress, for which he’s the primary author. “A Walk in the Mountains” draws upon Les’s fifty-plus years of experience in search and rescue as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Les and Margaret have four children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Over the years they’ve owned five St. Bernards.

The young Terranan security officer stared across the tavern table at his Darkovan Guard friend and said, “You want me to do what?”

“Help me search for my lost cousin, Eddard Ridenow. A simple walk in the mountains—nothing too tasking for a skilled warrior of your people.”

Laughing, Senior Lieutenant David Fairechild shook his head in feigned disbelief at the answer to his question. “You know how they feel about that, Mikhail, and I doubt if your people would allow it, anyway.”

“The Hastur has already asked for Terranan help. Your Legate conducted a survey of the area from space but found nothing. He told us that a severe storm over the mountains would prevent an air search using flyers. He offered the use of ground forces, but the Hastur wouldn’t go that far.
